With Governor Cuomo declining to call back the Senate for a special session to pass legislation that would keep New York City speed cameras in operation and refusing to commit to signing an executive order to keep the cameras in operation, Democratic candidate for Governor Cynthia Nixon today released the following statement:
“The Governor is running on his record as a experienced, pragmatic politician who get things done - but now he’s saying he doesn’t have the power to get a speed cameras bill passed? This is ridiculous. The Senate is controlled by Republicans because the Governor made it so - when he brokered a deal with the IDC, and refused to campaign against vulnerable Republican incumbents. Now, he needs to either sit down with them and figure out a way to get this bill passed; or he needs to sign an executive order. He’s had months and months to consider an executive order, the idea that it’s just now something he’s ‘considering’ is completely irresponsible. These cameras protect our kids.”
