Cynthia Nixon Endorses Zephyr Teachout for Attorney General

Cynthia and Zephyr team up to take on Trump and fight corruption in Albany and DC

NEW YORK, NY — Standing in front of Trump Tower, Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon today endorsed Zephyr Teachout for attorney general of New York. Citing Zephyr’s independence, progressive record, and history of standing up to power, Cynthia said Zephyr is uniquely qualified to hold Donald Trump and his associates accountable. Zephyr previously endorsed Cynthia when she first announced her bid for governor. You can find a full video of the endorsement HERE.

“We are witnessing an incredible moment in New York politics. Voters are increasingly rejecting establishment Democrats in favor of bold progressives and transformative policy. This movement is led by progressive fighters willing to take on the the Trump agenda and status quo politicians,” said Cynthia. “I’m honored to stand with Zephyr Teachout, who embodies independent progressive leadership. She challenged Andrew Cuomo four years ago and showed the world that establishment Democrats aren’t just unpopular, but beatable in New York State. I’m looking forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with her and a whole slate of insurgent candidates on September 13th to prove New Yorkers are ready to return our state to its rightful place as a leader of the resistance and a beacon of progressive ideals.”

Zephyr ran against Gov. Cuomo in the 2014 primary, challenging him on his labor,  environmental, and corruption record, and ultimately winning over 34 percent of the vote despite running with very little money, media coverage, or name recognition. In the aftermath of the primary, Cuomo promised to renew his commitment to raising the minimum wage and banned fracking, demonstrating the importance of primary elections and appetite for progressive candidates in New York. Cynthia’s run against Cuomo is similarly forcing Cuomo to the left with recent flip-flops on marijuana legalization, the plastic bag ban, the use of fracked gas infrastructure, his support for the IDC, and voting rights for parolees.

“I’ve supported Cynthia Nixon for Governor since she announced for two main reasons: I am a strong supporter of public education, and because Andrew Cuomo has failed to address the problem of corruption in Albany and inequality in our state,” said Zephyr. “We are in the midst of a political sea change in New York, and I’m proud to be part of it, along with her, Alexandria, the IDC challengers, Jumaane Williams, and the hundreds of new candidates running for local office. New York politics needs some fixing from the bottom up, and a Governor who will not stand for corruption in Albany. As Attorney General I won’t answer to anyone but the public, the law, and my conscience.”

Cynthia has endorsed a slate of progressive insurgents running in New York including congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, lieutenant governor candidate Jumaane Williams, as well as senate candidates Jessica Ramos, Julia Salazar, and Robert Jackson.
