Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi Endorses Cynthia Nixon for Governor

NEW YORK, NY — Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi today endorsed Cynthia Nixon’s bid for governor citing their shared commitment to combating homelessness, improving housing for tenants and preserving the social safety net. Hevesi represents the 28th district in the New York State Assembly, which includes Forest Hills, Rego Park, Ridgewood, Richmond Hill, Middle Village, Glendale, and Kew Gardens. This marks the first sitting assemblymember endorsement for Cynthia.

“As a lifelong Democrat, I’m proud to endorse Cynthia Nixon for Governor. She’s someone we can trust and work with, she’s been a tireless advocate for better schools, and she cares about the people of New York State,” said Assemblymember Hevesi. “Governor Cuomo, on the other hand, constantly lies to the people of New York. He claims to be fiscally responsible while saddling our children and grandchildren with billions in debt. He consistently pushes policies that hurt vulnerable New Yorkers, the homeless, human trafficking victims, people on public assistance.”

Hevesi is Chairman of the Assembly Social Services Committee, which is responsible for providing oversight of programs administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) and analyzing the state’s multi-billion dollar funding allotment for social services each fiscal year. In this role, he reviews legislation addressing financial, medical, and other support for people in need throughout New York State. Hevesi also serves as a member of the committees on Health, Energy, Insurance, and Labor. Both Hevesi and Cynthia are fighting for bold progressive policy that brings power back to New Yorkers, particularly the most vulnerable.

“Assemblymember Hevesi has spent decades fighting for New York’s tenants, victims of human trafficking, and low-income families and at-risk children,” said Cynthia. “He is a passionate champion of fighting for lower income families and making New York a fairer, more equitable state for everyone. I am honored to have his endorsement and look forward to working with him in the assembly as governor.”

Hevesi continued, “This year, Governor Cuomo pushed a proposal that would have increased the number of children being abused and placed in foster care, which costs taxpayers exponentially more yet results in worse outcomes. In this time of Trump, we must not look to combat a serial liar with another serial liar. We need real Democrats who defend our values, even when it’s tough, and who can inspire and challenge our state to do better.  Cynthia is the right choice, and I urge voters to support her in September.”
