Muslim Democratic Club of New York Endorses Cynthia Nixon for Governor

NEW YORK, NY — Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon was endorsed today by the Muslim Democratic Club of New York (MDCNY), an organization dedicated to increasing the civic empowerment of Muslim New Yorkers, advancing progressive policies in the Democratic Party, and electing responsible Democrats.

Last month, MDCNY hailed Cynthia’s visit to a New York City mosque and Islamic school to participate in iftar and meet with Muslim New Yorkers. Cynthia also celebrated Eid ul-Fitr in Bensonhurst Park. The appearances were notable because, as MDCNY pointed out, Andrew Cuomo has never visited a mosque during his two terms as New York State Governor.

“Muslim New Yorkers deserve a governor who sees and values them as a critical piece of our state’s fabric,” said MDCNY President Tahanie Aboushi. “We are confident that Cynthia will be a leader who keeps our issues in mind and continues to stand with us—whether in Albany or in our communities.”

MDCNY envisions a nation of informed voters participating in a vibrant democracy. New York in particular, with its diverse communities, led the way on issues such as voting rights for women and the civil rights movement. In that tradition, American Muslims can play an influential role in the decision-making process of local and state government. MDCNY seeks to support Democratic candidates and increase the number of registered and active American Muslim Democratic voters in NYC.

“I am honored to partner with the Muslim Democratic Club of New York to advance civil rights and equal representation for all Muslim New Yorkers and fight against the horrific xenophobia coming out of Washington,” said Cynthia. “With over one million Muslims just in the NYC metro area, and hundreds of thousands more across the state, they need a real advocate leading in Albany. I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with New York’s Muslim community to continue our work to create a New York for the many, not the few.”

This adds to a long list of organizations that have backed Cynthia’s bid for governor, including Indivisible Brooklyn, the Jewish Vote, Our Revolution, Justice Democrats, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Make the Road Action, New York Communities for Change, Citizen Action, the New York Progressive Action Network, and 350 Action. A group of progressive candidates vying to unseat centrist, establishment Democrats in New York have also backed Cynthia including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jessica Ramos, New York State Senate candidate in the 18th district Julia Salazar, and New York State Senate candidate in the 31st district, Robert Jackson.
