Cynthia Opposes Tax Breaks for New Amazon Distribution Center

Cuomo’s failed, corrupt economic development hands money to the ultra-rich, Cynthia opposes tax breaks for low-paying jobs

NEW YORK, NY – On Amazon Prime Day, Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon formally announced her opposition to tax breaks for a new Amazon distribution center in Rensselaer County. The out-of-state developer building the facility has requested nearly $14 million in tax breaks. The jobs are expected to pay less than $15/hr.

“We have to end this no-string attached corporate welfare,” said Cynthia. “Under Governor Cuomo, our economic development programs are defined more by convictions than by wages or jobs. We have to learn from the failure of the Buffalo Billion. The jobs at this distribution center do not even provide a living wage. The state government of New York should not be in the business of subsidizing jobs that keep people in poverty — especially when Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos is making over $275 million a day.”

Governor Cuomo has supported tax breaks for Amazon in the past. Amazon also paid no federal income tax in 2017.
