VIDEO: Cynthia Nixon Calls for Single-Payer Health Care in NY

Cynthia endorses a ‘Medicare For All’-style system in NY State to insure every New Yorker

NEW YORK, NY — Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon today called for a “Medicare for All,” single-payer health care system that will insure every single New Yorker. Cynthia also released an accompanying video on her plan, telling the story of when her mother was unemployed and uninsured and discovered she had a lump in her breast.

“We shouldn’t have to depend on our employers for insurance – and we certainly shouldn’t have to lie to our doctors to get the care we need,” said Nixon. “Health care should be a human right, not a privilege for those who can afford it.”

As over one million New Yorkers are currently uninsured and millions more are under-insured, Cynthia has endorsed the New York Health Act. The New York Health Act, which would create a single-payer system, has passed the New York State Assembly four years in a row, but every time has been blocked by the Republican State Senate that Cuomo’s IDC has bolstered.

“Every single New Yorker can have good health care, with no copays and no deductibles,” said Cynthia Nixon. “But first we have to start sending Democrats to Albany who stand with people, not corporations.”

According to an analysis of the plan, the New York Health Act would reduce overall health care spending by 15 percent or $45 billion per year, and over 98% of New York households would spend less on health care than they now spend.

As health care costs skyrocket and Republicans in Washington continue to attack health care, the movement for a ‘Medicare for All’ style single-payer plan has increasingly gained steam within the Democratic Party electorate and the American public at-large.

“In the age of Trump, Democrats can’t just sit back and wait for change to come from DC, or hope and pray that the next Congress or next president will be better,” said Cynthia. “At a time like this, progressive states like New York should be leading the way, to show the entire country that a better system is possible. With real progressive leadership, we can make the dream of true universal health care a reality in New York state.”
